Free mobile bike repair and safe-route education for our local commuters.
Bicycle Rescue is a revolutionary, non-transactional nonprofit model. We intercept neglected bicycles, refurbish them, and deploy them alongside rigorous traffic safety education to students and residents at absolute zero cost.
To ensure long-term operational sustainability, we are utilizing a self-funded, mobile-first, phased rollout strategy. Here is exactly how we are building this community asset from the ground up:
The transition toward active transportation in Southern California is hindered by economic barriers and infrastructure gaps.
The Dropout Risk: Approximately 60% of CSUF students are Pell Grant recipients. Transit insecurity is a primary driver of academic attrition; 79% of students experiencing basic needs insecurities have considered dropping out.
The Cost of Commuting: Working-class households in the North Orange County corridor spend up to 30% of their total income strictly on automotive upkeep, fuel, and parking.
The Safety Gap: Local corridors surrounding the campus see frequent, severe traffic accidents. This stems from a lack of protected bike infrastructure, rider safety gear, and traffic law education.
The Demographic Void: Existing regional bicycle co-ops restrict their educational cohorts to youth and seniors, leaving a complete service void for the 19-to-54-year-old collegiate and working-class populations.
OUR PHASED ROADMAP
Phase 0: The Bootstrap Summer (We Are Here)
Right now, we are launching our demand-first mutual-aid pilot. We are sourcing neglected bicycles, utilizing personal workspace to overhaul them into high-utility urban commuters, and deploying them directly to local college students and working adults facing transit insecurity for $0. Every summer build is tied to a mandatory "Wrench & Ride" maintenance lesson, allowing us to establish a direct proof-of-concept and document real community impact to secure major grant funding in the Fall.
Phase 1: Tailgate Triage & Direct Distribution (Fall)
Once equipped, we hit the ground running at Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton College, Troy High School, and Fullerton Union High School.
Mobile Triage: Operating right out of the truck tailgate, we will offer free basic tune-ups, flat fixes, safety inspections, and helmet distribution at high-traffic commuter hubs.
The Commuter Match: We aren't waiting for our 501(c)(3) status to get people rolling. Through our targeted online intake process, we will match fully refurbished frames directly to transit-insecure students and working adults.
"Wrench & Ride" Orientation: To receive a free bicycle, recipients complete a mandatory 30-minute orientation at the tailgate. We ensure the bike fits properly and the rider leaves knowing how to handle basic roadside maintenance safely.
The Commuter Slow Roll: We will host weekly, casual group rides specifically designed to teach riders how to safely map the lowest-stress routes, execute proper hand signals, and navigate Fullerton's intersections.
Phase 2: Closed-Loop Supply Capture & Legal Infrastructure
Once we establish our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, we permanently sunset the retail-flipping arm. We will form official agreements with the CSUF Police Department and local municipalities. Instead of letting abandoned campus bikes sit in impound lots, we legally divert those frames directly to our rescue fleet at absolute zero cost.
Phase 3 & 4: The Permanent Community Hub
The long-term horizon transitions Bicycle Rescue from a mobile incubator into a permanent, multi-functional community anchor space. This physical headquarters will house public safety seminars, grant-funded mechanics bays, and a media center to document the ongoing impact of the initiative.
WHO IS BUILDING THIS?
Unlike traditional retail-based bicycle cooperatives, Bicycle Rescue is built on a foundation of professional pedagogy and documentary storytelling.
The "Wrench and Ride" curriculum is developed and overseen by a soon-to-be-cleared Career Technical Education (CTE) credentialed educator actively teaching in Fullerton. This ensures that cohort instruction meets rigorous pedagogical benchmarks rather than functioning as unstructured open-shop time. Additionally, our internal media arm leverages over five years of professional video production experience to capture high-quality human impact stories, ensuring we can continuously prove our model's validity to our supporters.
